Teacher Assistant Bursary Programme

To offer academically deserving teacher assistants an opportunity to study full-time towards an application.

The challenge

The schools that the teachers’ assistants are placed and working in have a shortage of qualified teachers which has led to poor academic performance in the local schools. This project seeks to fill the skills gap within our schools and create a pipeline of qualified educators in our local schools whilst also empowering the teachers’ assistants participating in the program. At the same time, creating a sustainable exit plan that opens an opportunity for unemployed youth to participate in the project.

How we worked together

Together with an implementing partner, we have disbursed 11 bursaries to the assistant teachers of Petrusville. Since the commencement of their studies, the schools where they are employed gives them 1 hour off per day to focus on their studies. They make use of the I-Centre for internet needs and the local community development officer provides them with additional support.

Community investments are our voluntary initiatives that contribute to the long-term common good of local communities and come in addition to efforts made to mitigate or compensate for project-related impacts. We are committed to contributing to the communities in a way that allows them to develop by themselves without becoming dependent on us.
