Hanover Water Upgrade Project

building

In Hanover, Scatec equipped 3 boreholes in Emthanjeni Local Municipality, since the boreholes were not equipped with pumps and adequate infrastructure.

The challenge

Hanover has a population of  just above 6,000 people and most of them  depend on the municipality for water supply. The challenge of water shortage started about 5 years ago when two boreholes were disconnected. Three boreholes were hard hit by draught to a point where their water levels dropped drastically. The municipality started to initiate water restrictions where they executed water-shedding for several hours up to twice per day.

How we worked together

Scatec contracted a water specialist company to rollout the water project. IWS employed a local subcontractor company to construct all three borehole PV parks. The project included a 36 months Operations & Maintenance (O&M) plan where municipal employees were given the opportunity to be trained in how to manage the new infrastructure.

Key results

  • 3
    Solar-powered borehole pumps
  • 36
    Months of O&M Services
  • 6,482
    Total number of beneficiaries
  • 500
Cubic litres additional water provided per day

As a Hanover resident who experienced water shedding everyday, I’m very much grateful for what Scatec has done for our community. This project is a first of this kind to be provided by a private company and it will supply water to this community for several years to come, thanks to the Change Makers Scatec.
